It began with an accident, was fueled with a $500 investment, and today more than 90 percent of Americans know what a Slinky is. You know the jingle, "It's Slinky, it's Slinky, for fun it's a wonderful toy/It's Slinky, it's Slinky, it's fun for a girl and a boy."

The Slinky may very well be one of the most engaging, simple, classic toy designs of all time. Today, you can buy plastic ones, plush ones, and even 14-karat gold ones, but nothing is as satisfying as the original metallic design.

Betty James ran the Slinky company after her inventor husband joined a cult and dissappeared in South America.
