Black velvet or white canvas. Scooby Doo or PowerPuff Girls. From synthetic leopard-print and plastic to leather and tubular steel. The butterfly chair is functional, comfortable, space-saving and just, well, groovy. Originally designed pre-1940 (yes, that far back), and claimed by many as their own (no one knows who designed the first wooden-framed model), the butterfly chair was produced exclusively by Knoll from 1945 - 1975 until they lost a copyright infringement lawsuit. Now the butterfly design is produced by anyone and everyone from Target to Ralph Lauren.
